description

The old church of St. Severin used to stand on the site of the old churchyard in Sand . It was closed in 1894 after the new St. Severin Church had been built on the heights of Sand . There are no more relics from the church above ground. During the demolition, parts of the church and some old gravestones were filled in a cellar-like pit.

The old churchyard is enclosed by an old quarry stone wall. There are still numerous old grave crosses on the inside. Despite the removal of the ruins, it can be assumed that large parts of the archaeological monument have been preserved in the ground. This includes the foundations of several church building phases, which carry information about the history of the church and its structural development and use. Until the beginning of the 19th century, residents of the village were buried in the churchyard. Scientific examinations of the human remains can be used to find out their living conditions, age at death, diseases and social structures.

Due to the good state of preservation of the property, further traces of land documents relating to the oldest settlement history of Bergisch Gladbach and the Rheinisch-Bergisch district can be expected in the entire area of the former church and cemetery. Each individual layer provides specific information. For example, in the horizons of fire and rubble, the remains of damaging fires and warlike destruction are visible.

Ground monument

Scientific reasons are in the foreground for the protection and preservation of the church and the churchyard, because the testimonies in the ground can be used to clarify open questions about the funeral rites and the building history of the church. There is a public interest in the preservation and protection of the church desolation St. Severin, Kirchhof Sand monument . The area is therefore entered under No. 15 in the list of archaeological monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
