Old churchyard sand

The old churchyard Sand is located on Ommerbornstraße in the Sand district of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district .

history

The old churchyard , together with an own church, has been documented for the 13th century. After this became dilapidated, it was replaced by a new church in 1653 in the same place. The latter was demolished in 1894 because the new parish church of St. Severin Sand had been built about 200 m further north on Herkenrather Strasse . However, the churchyard has remained as a memorial to this day, although from now on the dead were buried in a newly created cemetery.

The area of the old churchyard is enclosed with a quarry stone wall made of local limestone. This separates the sacred area from the residential buildings surrounding it. 31 grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries have been placed on the churchyard wall. The two oldest date from 1633. The grave slab and the memorial of Johann Peter Ommerborn , who also went down in history as the hero of Ommerborn and was buried here, deserve special mention . From 1826 to 1837 he was pastor of Sand.
