The Kisch Lake ( Latvian : Ķīšezers ) is a large lake northeast of the Latvian capital Riga .

Earlier names were Stintsee in German and Ropažu ezers in Latvian . The lake's water originally flowed over the Langa into the Gauja . In the 13th century, the current drain into the Düna was dug by Cistercian monks to operate a mill. The lake's water level is usually lower than the sea level. With westerly winds and high tide, salt water sometimes flows from the Gulf of Riga into the lake. The main tributary is the Jugla . The 3 islands of the lake are together 8 hectares in size. There are both flat and steep bank sections.

There are 11 species of fish in the lake. The Riga Zoological Garden is located on the west coast . Together with the neighboring Jugla Lake, the lake is a popular local recreation area for the Riga population.
