history

The Kitesurf Cup Sylt has its roots in the Kitesurf Trophy , which took place for the first time in 2003 and 2004. After kitesurfing was classified in the sailing sport category, the way was clear for aviation law reasons to also hold kitesurfing competitions on the Brandenburg beach in front of Westerland . In the years up to 2008 the event was still part of the German championship series Kitesurf-Trophy; In 2009 the event brought the KPWT Kitesurf World Tour to Germany for the first time. In 2011, the event was the venue for the Slalom World Championship of the International Kiteboarding Association IKA, which was founded in 2008. The years followed as a run for the European championships in the freestyle discipline, accompanied by world rankings in the racing discipline. With the increasing differentiation of the sport, the organizers decided, after the experience of the Surfworld Cup Podersdorf , to join a Global Team Challenge. Teams of three compete for prize money of 10,000 euros, which goes exclusively to the team that placed first.
