Kithairon (eponym)
Kithairon ( Greek Κιθαιρών ), king of Plataiai , is a figure in Greek mythology .
As a handsome youth he disdained the love of Tisiphone, one of the Erinyes . As a punishment, she killed him - while he was grazing his flock on the mountain - with a snake that she pulled from her hair. The mountain range was then renamed from Asterion to Kithairon .
In another version, he was a greedy son who sought the life of his brother Helikon in order to inherit the parental property alone. However, when he fell Helikon from the rock, Kithairon fell himself into the depths. The mountains there were named after the brothers; the Erinyes took their seats at the Kithairon , while the Muses sat at the Helikon .
