Sounds from Wallachia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sounds from Wallachia is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 50). The work was premiered in Bucharest on January 18, 1848 according to the Gregorian calendar, or January 6 according to the Julian calendar valid there at that time .

Remarks

For financial reasons, Johann Strauss Sohn was forced to accept orchestral engagements outside of Vienna from 1846 onwards. In this context he undertook, among other things, commitments in Hungary and Wallachia , which is now part of Romania . He also got to know the local music, which influenced him in some of the compositions of that time. The Waltz Sounds from Wallachia is one of these works . As the title suggests, musical elements from Wallachia have been processed here. The waltz was then premiered on the spot, namely in Bucharest. The work is still occasionally played at concerts today. But it has not become a recurring repertoire piece.

The playing time is about 6 to 7 minutes depending on the musical understanding of the respective conductor.
