Klaus Eberhard Engel (born June 13, 1934 in Berlin ) is a successful German correspondence chess player . In 1978 he became European champion.

Correspondence chess career

Klaus Engel learned to play chess at the age of six. In 1953 he played his first correspondence chess tournament. As a result, he rose to the master class - the highest class in correspondence chess. In 1966 he received the title of International Master in Correspondence Chess . At the 5th Correspondence Chess Olympiad he achieved a result of 6.5 out of 8 for Germany in the final. He just missed qualifying for the 7th Correspondence Chess World Championship, missing half a point in the final table.

In 1978 he became European champion. He placed in the 12th European Championship with 12 out of 14, among other things before world champion Estrin , whom he defeated.

In 1983 the ICCF awarded him the title of Correspondence Chess Grandmaster , because he had fulfilled the required norm in the FINJUB-20 invitation tournament with 8.5 out of 13. In the same year he received the Golden Badge of Honor from the BdF for his successes .
