Klaushähnchen or Klaus-Hähnchen , in Low German Sunner-Klaus-Hähnken , is a regional and seasonal pastry that is traditionally produced and sold in many places in the Tecklenburger Land during Advent .

The festive pastries are mostly handcrafted from yeast cake dough with aniseed , baked and sprinkled with sugar . It is shaped like a chicken and is about six inches long, eight inches high, and two inches thick. On special occasions, however, there are sometimes larger-sized chickens. The name of the pastry is derived from the chicken shape from Sunner Klaus , the Low German name for St. Nicholas Day .

Little chickens are traditionally distributed primarily to children on St. Nicholas Day and St. Martin's Day , and in Mettingen at the opening of the annual Christmas market .
