Stickiness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In particular, surfaces that are characterized by adhesiveness are referred to as sticky . Sticky substances or structures or mixtures also have great cohesive forces . Stickiness can be a physico- mechanical phenomenon (as with Velcro fasteners or the stickiness of the gecko foot ) or chemically caused (e.g. due to partial polymerization ). Sticky substances are generally - but not generally - suitable as adhesives . To serve as an adhesive, the substances, that the parts to be joined wet and after contact bonding .

Physically induced stickiness usually results from the mechanical entanglement and cross-linking of filamentous surface structures. The further you get into the nano range , the more atomic forces such as Van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonds come into play.

Surfaces that only have high static or dynamic friction are often incorrectly referred to as sticky . On the other hand, sticky surfaces naturally always offer high frictional resistance .
