Origin of the name and history

The name "Kleine Steuer" - not far to the north of it there is another street called " Große Steuer (Hildesheim) " - astonishes tourists and new residents of the district again and again. The word "tax" in this name means "stairway" or "stairway". The small tax leads up a slope, which was mentioned as "Mons Cattorum" in 1301 and as "Cattesberch" in 1419. In the Middle Ages the confluence of the Little control was immediately south in the Bennostraße a 1430 first documentary mentioned goal of securing the the Katztor, patch Moritz mountain that was not surrounded by a wall by a rampart with a moat. The Katztor is marked on a map of the "City of Hildesheim and St. Mauritius" from 1770, but not the small tax. Possibly it was created after the demolition of the Katztor after 1832 and the leveling of the wall on the site of part of the fortifications as a direct connection between Bennostrasse and Mauritiuskirche .

On a map from 1896/98, which shows Hildesheim and its surroundings - but without street names - (Königlich-Prussische Landesaufnahme), the small tax is entered as a street.

On the city map of Hildesheim and the Moritzberg of the Berlin company Pharus GmbH from the beginning of the 20th century (around 1907), the Kleine Steuer can be seen as a street with the name "Godehards Ruhe". This name refers to Bishop Godehard , who in 1024 fortified Moritzberg as a strategically important place and had a chapel built here, to which he gave the patronage of his original monastery , St. Mauritius . He died in this chapel on the Moritzberg in 1038.

Officially, the name "Kleine Steuer" first appeared in the address book in 1936. During the Second World War , the small tax remained intact.

location and size

With a length of 90 m, the Kleine Steuer connects Bennostraße , from which it can be reached via 7 steps, with Stiftskirchenweg. It runs uphill to the west and ends immediately in front of the St. Mauritius Church . It is separated from the Stiftskirchenweg by a Gothic pointed arch. With a width of just over 1 m, the Kleine Steuer is one of the narrowest streets in Hildesheim. The house numbers in the small tax only range from No. 1 to No. 2.

Sights and special features

The Kleine Steuer is the only street in Hildesheim that is paved continuously with cobblestones , and to the south it is bordered by a natural stone wall that has only been replaced by cement in a few places . The only two entrances to the house or property are also located here.

From the small tax you have a nice view of the prestigious school building Bennostraße 2, completed in 1915, known in Hildesheim under the name " Yellow School " and one of the most striking buildings in the district. The school grounds are connected to the Kleine Steuer in the north.

To the west, the Kleine Steuer leads uphill to one of the most important sights in Hildesheim, the Romanesque Mauritius Church with its striking Baroque tower from 1765, which characterizes the entire Moritzberg district . Immediately in front of the Mauritius Church, the Kleine Steuer joins the Stiftskirchenweg, which can be reached through a Gothic archway in a quarry stone wall. The corner house, the Kratzbergsche Hof , is an elongated, two-story half - timbered house that was built as a curia in 1654 . The small tax also offers a beautiful view of the Kratzbergschen Hof and the Mauritius Church.
