Small Toggenburg Chronicle
A historical work written in German from the second half of the 15th century is referred to as the Little Toggenburg Chronicle , which probably originates from a Toggenburg resident in Lichtensteig . Since the name of the Wittenwiler family (see also Heinrich Wittenwiler ) is mentioned several times, it was thought that a Wittenwiler was the author.
The chronicle begins with the Toggenburgers who died near Morgarten, discusses weather conditions and local catastrophes and goes into detail about the Old Zurich War (until 1446), whereby an anti-Zurich position can be identified.
Tradition and reception
The complete chronicle has only survived in a part of Cgm 558 (pages 113r-124r) written by Hugo Wittenwiller at the end of the 15th century . In addition, there are only excerpts from the humanist Vadian ( St. Gallen Abbey Library , Cod. 42, pp. 125–127).
A noteworthy academic engagement with the text since the edition by Gustav Scherrer 1874 (pp. 1-42) is not to be registered. The detailed review by Anton Birlinger in his Alemannia (4th year, 1877, pp. 203–206) deserves a mention .
