The small pouch mole ( Notoryctes caurinus ) is a species of marsupial from the family of the pouch mole (Notoryctidae).
features
Notoryctes caurinus measures around 13 cm, the tail is very short at around 2 cm. This species has no eyes and hardly any ears. The limbs are strong, the paws resemble small shovels. The pointed head helps with digging. The coat color is yellow.
behavior
The lesser bag mole spends most of its time digging shallow tunnel systems, with the caves being much deeper. Allegedly it comes to the surface after heavy rain.
habitat
The species is endemic to Australia and inhabits arid, hot deserts in the middle of the country.
food
The small pouches feed on insect larvae and insect pupae. It tracks down its prey through tracking and minimal listening due to the lack of eyes.
threat
By the World Conservation Union IUCN this kind in 1996 was threatened as strong ( Endangered listings). No assessment has been carried out since 2008 due to insufficient data ( data deficient ). The reasons for the threat include hunting by cats, dingoes and foxes; possibly also the decreasing number of food sources is responsible.
