The strawberry root weevil ( Otiorhynchus ovatus ) is a kind from the family of weevils (Curculionidae). It is also often called the Little Black Weevil .

features

Small black weevils are about five millimeters long and, like the black weevil, which is about twice as large, have longitudinal wrinkles on the pronotum . On the wings there are parallel rows of dots with fine stripes in between. The body is colored black, the legs contrasting in a reddish color. The thorax is narrower than the elytra.

The larva is five to six millimeters long. It is whitish in color and curved in shape. Your red-brown head capsule is slightly elongated.

distribution

The beetles are mainly found in the lowlands. This also distinguishes them from the black weevil, which is particularly common in the low mountain ranges and the Alps. The small black weevil prefers to colonize the spruce forests from Scandinavia to Central Europe and is a common species there. The species was introduced in North America .

Way of life

The diurnal animals mostly crawl around on the ground or on spruce trees . They feed on the needles and shoots of the spruce. The small black weevil causes a typical feeding pattern, as it only leaves the thin central ribs of the needles or - with low infestation - eats the needle edges in jagged edges. However, it also eats the bark of pine trees that are up to six years old.

The beetles do not have any wings and are therefore unable to fly. After mating, the female lays the eggs on the ground. They can cause major damage, especially in tree nurseries . The root damage they cause can be so severe that young plants die in the same year. Even older spruces up to ten years old can die after being infested several times.

After several moults, the larva pupates in the ground. In the summer the finished beetle hatches.
