It was part of the medieval city fortifications, of which large parts were later demolished for cost reasons. After the “ Marstor ” had been demolished in 1821 and the “ Scharnor ” in 1825 , the Xanten city council refused to demolish the Klever Tor in 1843 . At that time it was used as a detention center.

The Klever Tor consists of two gates that are connected by a bridge. This bridge used to lead over a ring-shaped moat around the city center of Xanten, which today serves as a city park. The inner gate consists of a single square tower in which today three rentable apartments are offered as holiday homes. The outer gate is formed by two round towers, the so-called " Owl Towers ", and a wall arch. In 1843 the gate was in a miserable condition so that Franz Langenberg was commissioned to restore it. The roof of the Owl Towers was completely missing, the masonry was damaged in some places, and the arch above the passage threatened to collapse. For this reason, walls inside the gate, which had been added later to allow the gate to be used as a detention center and which were now placing too much strain on the foundation, were torn down and the gate was completely renovated. After the Second World War , the upper floors of the gate had to be reconstructed, but the original substructure from 1393 is still preserved.
