history
SAP co-founder Dietmar Hopp started planning the Klima Arena Sinsheim in 2014. In an interview with the Heidelberger Rhein-, Neckar-Zeitung in December 2019, Hopp said: “If people claim that there is no climate change and that there is no need for climate protection, then I can only shake my head. Such people just didn't understand what it was about. It's not about my or their future, but about the future of our youth and children. The youth took to the streets for this. These Friday demonstrations were good and important. "
The Klima Arena is financed by the Dietmar Hopp Foundation. In September 2014, the non-profit Climate Foundation for Citizens was founded, which acts as the sponsor of the Klima Arena. The construction costs of the energy plus house, which received the highest level of certification “platinum” from the German Society for Sustainable Building (DGNB), amounted to 40 million euros. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 5, 2017, the topping-out ceremony on July 12, 2018. The official inauguration of the building, which is unique because of its round shape, took place on October 7, 2019 in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel and Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann .
Content
The Klima Arena deals with the causes and consequences of the climate crisis. For young and old, it is a place of inspiration for climate protection and the sustainable use of our environment. In a hands-on exhibition with a size of 1,400 square meters, the basics of climate change, living and energy, mobility and consumption are dealt with; in the 14,000 square meter theme park, the focus and challenge are on nature as a living and economic area. The glacier cinema is the centerpiece of the exhibition. This journey through time into the virtual world of the year 2100 takes 13 minutes: the Amazon rainforest only exists in greenhouses, sea levels have risen, the Arctic is virtually ice-free, breathing apparatus is part of everyday life. A highlight of the 27 exhibits is the simulation of the "Blue Marble". The "Blue Marble" is based on a legendary photo of our planet taken by the Apollo 17 crew on December 7, 1972. The uniqueness and vulnerability of our earth can be seen on the digital globe, for example how warming leads to changes and thus to tipping points and concrete threat scenarios.
The aim is to achieve “basic literacy on climate protection topics” in the Klima Arena. On the one hand, the visitors should be given well-founded information, on the other hand they should receive food for thought and possible solutions for personally motivated action in everyday life. All facts, statements and messages are scientifically proven in the Klima Arena.
