The clinker gate made it possible to exit the city center towards Pfersee

The clinker gate (originally Thor behind the Holy Cross ) was a city gate of the outer city wall in the northwest of Augsburg city center. It was located on the site of today's Volkhartstrasse and served as the exit from the city towards Pfersee . It had throughout history different names, such as Senderlinstor , Rose author or Schluderertor .

First mentioned in a document in 1358, the clinker gate was equipped with a striking bridge in 1374. In 1450 the striking bridge was replaced by a stone bridge. As with some other gate systems, the city architect Elias Holl was responsible for the redesign of the clinker gate in 1608 . Barely a hundred years later, the brick gate was destroyed in the War of the Spanish Succession . After reconstruction and expansion, the brick gate was demolished in 1874 when the city fortifications were abandoned.
