In 2002, the Risshō University ( 立正 大学 , Risshō daigaku ) celebrated its 130th anniversary, making it one of the oldest universities in Japan. As a seminary of the Nichiren-shū , a school of Nichiren Buddhism , its origins go back to the year 1580 .

One of its former directors ( Tanzan Ishibashi ) was the 55th Prime Minister of Japan from 1956 to 1957. He was considered an important economic expert and at the time vehemently advocated the resumption of diplomatic relations with China.

The main campus of the university is located in Shinagawa, Tokyo ( 35 ° 37 ′ 16 ″  N , 139 ° 43 ′ 23.2 ″  E, coordinates: 35 ° 37 ′ 16 ″  N , 139 ° 43 ′ 23.2 ″  E ) and Kumagaya in Saitama Prefecture ( 36 ° 6 ′ 29.1 ″  N , 139 ° 21 ′ 51 ″  E ).
