The klipstein grave and the klipstein oak are a tomb in Darmstadt .
History and description
The cliff grave was erected in 1846. The Darmstadt forester Philipp Engel von Klipstein was buried in the forest. His grave lies directly under the oak tree named after him . The tomb is on the footpath from Darmstadt to Traisa in the Darmstadt Ostwald. Along with the Hartig monument , the cliff grave is one of the most important memorials in the Darmstadt Forest.
A tombstone made of natural stone and a metal plaque on the oak are reminiscent of Klipstein.
Philipp Engel from Klipstein
Philipp Engel von Klipstein was President of the Grand Ducal Forest Directorate. He was a student of the forest scientist Georg Ludwig Hartig . When various forest scientists began to publicly revile Hartig's achievements in the 1830s, Klipstein took the lead in defending Hartig's teachings. Klipstein collected money and had the Hartig monument designed by Georg Moller and installed in the Darmstadt pheasantry . A lot of money was left over from the collection, which was used as the “Hartig Foundation” for scholarships for young forest students.
