The Benavides Monastery ( Real Monasterio de Santa María de Benavides , also Bene-Vivas ) was a Cistercian abbey in the Castile-León region in northern Spain . The monastery was in today's Caserío de Benavides in the municipality of Boadilla de Rioseco .

history

The monastery was founded in 1169 by Countess Estefania Ramirez, the widow of Count Ponce de Minerva, as a daughter monastery of Sobrado Monastery, originally in Valverde de Campos (about 5 km south of Medina de Rioseco , Palencia province ), but based on around 1179 relocated an area donated by King Alfonso VIII in Benavides . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The daughter of the monastery of La Vega came from the monastery . The convent developed in 1250 under the sponsorship by Rodrigo Gonzàles Giron, the steward ( Mayordomo del Rey ) Ferdinand III. (reg. 1217 / 1230-1252). The abbey existed until the Napoleonic Wars . As part of the nationalization of church property in Spain , the complex was sold and demolished in 1841.
