The Monastery of La Vega (Santa María de la Vega) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Renedo de la Vega , comarca Vega-Valdavia , in the province of Palencia , region of Castile-Leon , in Spain .
history
The monastery is a subsidiary of Benavides Monastery , which was itself a daughter of Sobrado Monastery , from 1215. It was thus part of the filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The founders were Rodrigo Rodríguez Girón, who later became Count of Carrión and Saldaña, and Inés Pérez. The monastery was endowed with properties in La Serna, Lerones, Renedo, Santillán, Frechilla, Cervatos and other places. In 1218 it was confirmed by Pope Honorius III. The monastery developed poorly economically and received various benefits from King Sancho IV of Castile . The monastery is believed to have fallen victim to the general dissolution of the monastery by the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal . The donor graves were sold to the Hispanic Society in New York in 1925. In 1931 the monastery was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico ( Bien de Interés Cultural ), but has since been entered on the Red List of Buildings at Risk (Lista Roja de Patrimonio in peligro).
Plant and buildings
Remains of the church, a three-aisled basilica, have been preserved from the brick monastery complex, namely the main apse with a semicircular end, a straight closed side apse, further partly the north wing and the east wing of the cloister.
