The Colégio do Espirito Santo (or de São Bernardo ) monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the city of Coimbra in Portugal .
history
The monastery in the university town is said to have been built in 1545 and elevated to an abbey in 1549. After the Estrela Monastery was dissolved in 1579, its goods were transferred to the Monastery in Coimbra. The time of the dissolution - certainly before 1834 - is not known. In the 19th century the monastery was converted into a palazzo.
Buildings and plant
The monastery and college were located in the southern part of Rua da Sofia (No. 96) in Coimbra (the main road towards Porto ). The "rather shabby" complex has two cloisters, one of which has Tuscan columns, and figural faiences.
