The Estrela Monastery (Santa Maria da Estrela de Boidobra; Maceira de Covelliana) is a former Cistercian abbey in Portugal . It was near Boidobra a few kilometers south of the city of Covilhã .

history

The monastery was supposedly founded in 1230 (or before 1220) by Dom Mendo, the abbot of the Maceira Dão monastery , as a subsidiary of the Alcobaça monastery and belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux primary abbey . In 1321 the monastery was valued at £ 150. When the abbot of Clairvaux visited it in 1533, the abbey was considered a small and poor settlement. The monastery was closed in 1579. His goods were transferred to the Colégio do Espirito Santo monastery in Coimbra . In the following period it is said to have been completely destroyed.
