The monastery Maceira Dão (Santa Maria de Maceira Dao, Macenaria) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Freguesia Fornos de Maceira Dao in District of Viseu in Portugal .
history
The monastery was donated by Sueiro Teodoniz in Moimenta do Dão in 1161 and moved to Fornos de Maceira Dão in 1173. Dom Afonso Henriques placed it under his personal protection. It was accepted into the Cistercian Order in 1188 as a subsidiary of the Alcobaça Monastery and belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1560 Henry I of Portugal left the property of two dissolved monasteries to the monastery. Like all Portuguese Cistercian monasteries, Maceira Dão was dissolved in 1834. The Concelho von Mangualde then received the monastery property . The monastery is now privately owned.
Buildings and plant
Mannerist and Baroque architecture with an oval church dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery is classified as a national monument.
