Building description

Khachkar

The monastery complex includes a church with a gavit , a small chapel surrounded by a cemetery and the ruins of the former village of the same name (Deghdznut). The exact year of construction of the main church is unknown. It is dated to the 8th century and could therefore be older than the monastery itself and about the same age as the monastery of Taghdzank. The building is a cross-domed church . It was built from finely carved pink tuff . The roof rests on a cross vault typical of Armenian churches of the time. Its outer walls are richly decorated with arches. The roof of the church is supported by four half-columns, which also served as storage for the destroyed dome.

The altar is on the east side of the building. There is also the staircase to the second floor of the building. The altar is flanked by columns. There are also two side chapels on the east side. The gavit is built in front of the church to the west. It was also made of pink tuff between 1258 and 1274 and is now largely in ruins. The vestibule has a rectangular floor plan. Its roof is supported by two pairs of crossing vaults. In the center of the roof there is an opening through which light could get inside the building. The roof and floor are tiled. Inside the Gavits there are many Chatschkare (intricately carved memory blocks with a cross in relief in the middle, surrounded by geometric and plant motifs). The most important were created by the medieval masters Petros (Peter) and Qaghaq. The foundation of the monastery is described on it. Of the portals des Gavits, the open east portal leading to the church has a high artistic value. The cross on the lintel above the entrance is adorned with delicate plants and geometric ornaments. The west portal is also richly decorated.

The chapel is about 20 meters northeast of the main church. It has been reconstructed several times.
