Eschelbach Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eschelbach monastery in Eschelbach an der Ilm in the municipality of Wolnzach was a branch of the Don Bosco sisters .

history

In 1853 the Eschelbach Monastery was founded by the pastor Misslinger as an institution for boys. As early as 1867 it went to the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer and since 1924 the monastery has been under the administration of the Don Bosco Sisters. Initially it was used as an educational institution for girls, now the supporting association Institut Maria Hilf runs a kindergarten and a daycare center here.

In 1944 and 1945 some of the buildings served as a satellite camp for the Dachau concentration camp . In the courtyard of the monastery there was a barrack fenced with barbed wire, in which around 40 prisoners were housed.

Eight sisters lived in the monastery until 2009, and it has been empty since then.

The monastery was demolished in summer 2019.
