Hîncu Monastery
The Hîncu Monastery (also: Hâncu , Hâncul ) is located in the Republic of Moldova in the Nisporeni district , near the village of Bursuc, about 40 kilometers (as the crow flies) northwest of the capital Chișinău . The monastery is a national monument.
It was built by Mihalcea Hîncu after escaping the Tatars with his daughter Paraschiva . While on the run, he had sworn that if they escaped, he would build a monastery. The monastery now stands at the point where the escape was successful. In 1678 its walls were still made of wood, it was not until 1835 that a stone summer house was built.
In the period from 1956 to 1990 the monastery was closed by the Soviet Union and the site was used as a recreation facility for the Ministry of Health. In 1990 the residents of the neighboring towns applied for the monastery to be reopened. The monastery was generously expanded, a winter building was built, and a large Orthodox church is under construction.
There are several sources of natural mineral water in the vicinity of the monastery .
