Jellyfish protective suit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A jellyfish protective suit (in English Stinger Suit ) is a mostly one-piece swimsuit with long sleeves and legs, sometimes with attached socks and a hood . It is made from dimensionally stable, elastic fabrics, mostly from the Lycra fabric used for swimwear .

It was developed as protective clothing for water sports enthusiasts (swimmers, snorkelers, surfers and divers) in the tropical coastal waters of Australia : dangerous jellyfish species ( e.g. sea wasp or Irukandji jellyfish ) often appear there in the summer months . Since contact with a single specimen of said jellyfish species can be fatal because of their nettle poison, reliable protection is required.

The suit also protects against the aggressive UV radiation and thus prevents sunburn and skin cancer and can also be used as an undersuit for wet suits .

In the meantime, various companies produce such suits, and the Stinger Suits company gave the product its name in the English-speaking world. They can also be rented at Australian beaches.
