The Kalenić Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Serbia , south of Kragujevac near Jagodina on the territory of the Rekovac municipality . The monastery church is a major work of the Morava school of Serbian-Byzantine - as well as late Byzantine art . Erected by the chamberlain Bogdan at the time of the despot Stefan Lazarević (1404–1427), the building is a princely foundation of a three- corner complex with a high, narrow dome on a high drum and a low glare dome over the narthex .

The use of alternating rows of bricks and stone, as well as wide mortar joints and the rich, sculptural decor with windows and rosettes decorated in bas-relief technique result in a harmonious connection between western and eastern architectural tradition, which is effective in the late Byzantine artistic era in Serbia. The balance of the architectural solution and the quality of the facade decoration, which together form a harmonious whole, rank Kalenić among the outstanding late medieval church buildings in Europe.

Frescoes

The frescoes inside are also among the most outstanding in Serbian art. Their elegance, realistic representation and monumentality bring them closer to the international Gothic style . The wedding at Canaa is the most famous representation here.

The four miniatures of the Radoslav Gospel are so similar to the main fresco painting of the Morava School in the Kalenić Monastery that the participation of Radoslav, the painter of the miniatures and his assistants in the painting of the church is assumed.
