The Monastery of Lafões (São Cristóvão de Lafões) is a former Cistercian abbey above the Landeira stream in the concelho São Pedro do Sul in the Viseu district in Portugal .
history
The monastery was founded around 1123 as a hermit monastery and probably passed to the Cistercians around 1163 (according to other information already in 1138), in whose order it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Like all Portuguese Cistercian monasteries, Lafões was dissolved in 1834 after the victory of the Liberals in the Miguelist War. Currently, the former monastery, which has been classified as a Monumento deintereste público (Monument of Public Interest) since 2010 , is used as a rural tourism.
Buildings and plant
The monastery was rebuilt in the 18th century. The church, which had already burned down twice, was rebuilt in 1704 and consecrated in 1761. It is an octagonal structure. The square of the two-story enclosure is to the right of the church as seen from the entrance.
