Owińska Monastery

The Owińska Cistercian Monastery is a former monastery in Owińska , in the Greater Poland Voivodeship , a few kilometers north of Poznań .

It was built by Cistercian women between 1242 and 1252 under the reign of Przemysł I, Duke of Greater Poland, in the place mentioned in 1294 as Ovensko . Przemysłs I's sister Anna was abbess there. Extensive agriculture belonged to the monastery. The 120 square kilometer dominion of the monastery also included numerous villages in the area: Barcinek , Biedrusko , Bolechowo , Chludowo , Dębogóra , Miękowo , Radojewo , Radzim , Skorzęcin , Trzuskotowo and Wierzonka , possibly also Czerwonak .

The buildings that remain today, including John the Baptist consecrated church and cloister, dating from the 18th century. They were designed by the Italian builders Giovanni Catenazzi and Pompeo Ferrari . In modern times the monastery also ran a women's school.

The monastery existed until 1797. In 1838 the first psychiatric hospital in Wielkopolska was established in the monastery buildings. Since 1952 they have housed a school and educational facility for blind children. The church serves as the local parish church .

Today it is a focal point of the Cistercian Road .
