history

Church of St. Margaret in Podlažice

The Podlažice monastery was first mentioned in 1159, but it is believed that it was founded a few years earlier. According to the monastery documents, the nobleman Vrbata is said to have been the founder.

From 1344 the Podlažice monastery belonged to the territory of the newly founded diocese of Litomysl . During the term of office of the bishops Peter Jelito and Albrecht von Sternberg , there were repeated disputes with the cathedral chapter because of the monastery's possessions.

Although the monastery was destroyed in the Hussite Wars in 1421 and not rebuilt, it is still known today as the place of origin of the famous Codex Gigas , also known as the Devil's Bible .

At the instigation of the Königgrätzer Bishop Johann Franz Christoph von Talmberg 1696-1721 the St. Margaret Church ( Kostel svaté Markéty ) was built on the site of the original monastery . In 2003 it was extensively renovated.

Due to archaeological excavations in the years 1908-1909, the exact location of the former monastery could be researched.
