The Sandoval Monastery (Santa María de Villaverde de Sandoval; Saltus Novalis) is a former Cistercian abbey in the village of Villaverde de Sandoval in the municipality of Mansilla Mayor around 10 km south-southeast of León in the province of León in Castile-León in Spain , at the confluence of the Rio Esla and Rio Porma.

history

The monastery was founded by Count Pedro Ponce de Minerva and his wife Estefania Ramirez in 1167 on the basis of land given to them by King Alfonso VII of Castile in 1142. The settlement with the founding convention under Abbot Diego Martinez probably did not take place until 1171 from La Santa Espina Monastery from the affiliation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . As a result, the monastery received extensive donations. In the 15th century it experienced a decline that did not end until 1487 when it joined the Castilian Cistercian congregation. During the abolition of the monastery under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal , the monastery was dissolved and abandoned in 1835.

Sandoval Monastery Church

The partly pointed barrel vaulted church, which was only completed in Gothic style in 1462, has the floor plan of a Latin cross with three naves, each with three bays divided by arches, a transept and three semicircular apses on the east side. There is a Romanesque portal in the north wall of the transept. The enclosure, which was renewed in the early modern period, is located south (to the right of) the church. Only the surrounding walls stand from the east wing. The Romanesque windows of the chapter house are bricked up. The dormitory lay above the chapter house . The refectory , kitchen and heating room were located on the south side of the enclosure.
