History of nursing in Neuburg

On July 8, 1840, three sisters from the Order of the Sisters of St. Elisabeth (Elisabethinerinnen) from the convent Azlburg near Straubing to Neuburg and founded a branch here, supported by the great benefactress of the Elisabethinerinnen, Electress Leopoldina from Austria. They took over the nursing of the Neuburg women in the hospital and poor house of the St. Elisabeth monastery.

In 1954, the nuns began nursing children. In 1961 the monastery opened a children's hospital (renovated and modernized in 1999) with now 105 beds. Until 1978 Elisabethinerinnen in Neuburg only looked after women and children. When the Barmherzigen Brüder withdrew from Neuburg (1978), they were solely responsible for nursing the sick. From 1987 to 1992 the order rebuilt the clinic - now for women and men. The still existing monastery, with the St. Wolfgang chapel in new rooms since 1996, has been running a nursing school since 1948 and a nursing school for children since 1954. The order, headed by Sister Maria Goretti Böck, is the sole shareholder of the United Ordenskrankenhäuser GmbH, the sponsor of the St. Elisabeth Clinic in Neuburg; Günter Strobl is appointed as managing director.

The Catholic youth welfare of the Diocese of Augsburg , also the sponsor of the Josefinum in Augsburg , will take over the St. Elisabeth Clinics (shares in the United Ordenskrankenhäuser GmbH) on June 1, 2017 .
