history

The monastery consecrated to St. Anna was founded in 1748 by the Elisabethine Convent in Prague . The Elizabethines are committed to nursing the sick and were looking for a place to build a hospital. In both Munich and Straubing, however, they were initially unable to acquire suitable land or buildings, also because of existing hospitals and fears of competition from local pharmacists and doctors. With the support of Elector Karl Theodor , the Azlburg , which had been in the possession of Straubing aristocratic families for several hundred years and was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War, was acquired by the widow Maria Anna Franziska von Suess for 8,000 guilders ; in 1749 the first five nuns moved in, short Later, novices were also accepted.

Under the superior Maria Clara Demlin (1733-1804) a collection for the construction of a church and a hospital was carried out in 1786. The existing parts of the building were also used by the Munich court architect Andreas Baumgartner for the construction of a four-wing, early classicist complex , and the church was consecrated in 1798. Mathias Obermayr from Straubing carried out the stucco work in the church, Franz Xaver Merz designed the wall and ceiling paintings on biblical themes of nursing (St. Elisabeth, healing at the Bethesda pond ).

It was abolished in 1807 in the course of secularization in Bavaria . The government took over management and planned to sell the monastery, but could not find a buyer. In 1813 the complete dissolution of the monastery was decided. The property of the monastery was not recorded . The sisters were allowed to continue nursing in secular clothing. In 1829 the monastery was rebuilt by King Ludwig I of Bavaria .

The hospital building was rebuilt in 1906 and expanded in 1929, 1953 and 1964.

At the beginning of 2006, the ownership share of Elisabethinen and Caritas in the St. Elisabeth Hospital was transferred to the Barmherzigen Brüder Bavarian Order Province of KdöR . The city of Straubing is also a co-owner.
