St. Theodor was a Cistercian monastery in Nicosia on the island of Cyprus .

history

In 1244 the abbot Boniface von Citeaux gave his approval for the establishment of the Cistercian convent of St. Theodor in Nicosia. It was founded at the suggestion of Alice de Montbeliard, widow of the regent Philip of Ibelin , in order to create a place for the care of her daughter Maria. It was founded in the immediate vicinity of the Cistercian Abbey of Beaulieu . The circumstances of the foundation by a widow of the regent of the Kingdom of Cyprus and the fact that the future abbess Plaisance came from one of the most distinguished families in Cyprus indicate the special importance of the convent. In addition, he was equipped with larger property, as shown by tax lists. The monastery no longer existed when parts of the Venetian city wall of Nicosia were built in its place in 1567.

Monastery buildings

In August 2004, during construction work on the building of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Cyprus, the grave slab of Abbess Plaisance de Giblet (died February 10, 1328) was found. Subsequent excavations confirmed the site as the site of the former monastery and promoted u. a. the foundations of the fountain house in the cloister revealed.
