history

Monastery

The chapel consecrated to St. Nicholas was founded as a hermitage in 1450 by the hermit Antonius von Siegenburg. The cave church, newly built in 1603, is one of the few rock-hewn churches in Europe with a natural roof. The church is closed with a wall decorated with frescoes on the inside, but the remains of the frescoes are badly damaged by the weather. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 in the course of secularization .

The “Klösterl” inn was set up in the hermitage in 1880 and has been operated with interruptions ever since. A visit to the chapel can be requested from the landlords.
