The islands came to Finland in 1917, and to the Soviet Union in 1940 as a result of the Winter War . The majority of the Russian monks moved to their current location in the part of Karelia that remained near Finland. Monks were also resettled from the northern Pechenga monastery to eastern Finland.
The monastic community initially kept the Russian language , in the liturgy Church Slavonic . In order to open up to the Finnish-speaking Orthodox Christians - who number around 60,000 today - the monastery switched to the Finnish language in 1977 .
