Văratec Monastery

The Văratec Monastery is located in the northeast of Romania around 40 km from Piatra Neamț in the Neamț district .

history

The current church of the Romanian Orthodox nunnery was built between 1808 and 1812 on the site of a small wooden church from the 16th century. The Church of the Assumption, the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist, the Reorganization Church and the Chapel of St. Nicholas were later built on the monastery grounds. In contrast to other monasteries in the area, the church is not surrounded by a fortress wall and a compact building complex.

The monastery complex houses the tomb of Veronica Micle, Mihai Eminescu's friend , and a museum with valuable documents about the Vltava from the 16th to 18th centuries. There are numerous small individual buildings around the main church in which the nuns live. At times, up to 1,000 nuns lived in the monastery.

The natural location of the monastery has attracted many writers and poets. People like Mihai Eminescu, Garabet Ibrăileanu, Gala Galaction and Calistrat Hogas lived and worked in the monastery .
