Veszprémvölgy Monastery
The Monastery of the Most Holy Mother of God was a nunnery in Veszprém in Hungary . It was Byzantine Orthodox from the 11th to the 12th centuries , then a Cistercian convent until the 16th century .
location
The monastery complex was located at the foot of the Veszprém castle hill in the valley ( Veszprémvölgy ). Today the reconstructed floor plans of the monastery and a baroque church can be seen.
history
The origin of the monastery is unclear. According to a document from 1109, it is said to have been founded by King Stephen I , but this raises some questions. The alleged founding deed, like the copy from 1109, is said to have been made out in a Greek and a Latin version, which is unique in the preserved Hungarian historical tradition. In the deed, the monastery was confirmed in possession of nine villages. It was first referred to as the Cistercian convent in 1240. It was one of the richest nunneries in Hungary. Visitations by the abbot of Pilis are recorded in 1476 and 1524, which indicates a possible subordination to this monastery. In 1538 (1543?) The nuns fled from the advancing Turks to Körmend in the far north-west of Hungary. The monastery was destroyed in 1553.
In 1627 the Jesuits in Győr received the remains of the monastery complex. They established a college and began building a church around 1644, which however could not be completed as they were dissolved as an order in 1773.
From 1998 to 2002 the complex was archaeologically examined and the ground plans reconstructed. In 2010 the church was completed and consecrated for use by several denominations. Today it is mostly used as an event space.
