Forest region in Knapdale

Knapdale ( Scottish Gaelic Cnapadal ) is a rural district in the region Argyll and Bute in Scotland . It forms the area immediately north of the Loch of Tarbert on the Kintyre peninsula . Less than 2,400 people live here (as of 2010). Knapdale comprises the boroughs of North Knapdale and South Knapdale. The district is one of the Scottish National Scenic Areas .

Knapdale has a large area of forest that was reforested in the 1930s. It was one of the measures taken against unemployment at the time. Those involved in the afforestation work included many who had worked in the mines and heavy industry of Scotland. During the Second World War there were also some camps for prisoners of war in Knapdale. Knapdale is also said to be the place where the European beaver , originally native to Scotland , is being reintroduced on an experimental basis . After long discussions with nature conservation organizations such as the Scottish Natural Heritage , the Scottish government has now given its approval to start reintroduction in spring 2009.
