The Daudebardia Rufa ( Daudebardia rufa ) is a predatory living snail species from the family of Daudebardien from the subordination of terrestrial snails (gastropod). They are half-slugs; only the young can fully withdraw into the housing.

features

The housings are very flattened and the last turn is very pronounced ear-shaped. The upper and lower edges of the housing are approximately parallel. It has around 2 to 2.5 turns and is only a few millimeters in size (approx. 4–6 mm). It is yellowish, slightly shiny and thin-walled. The last contact is only slightly calcified or not completely calcified. The surface is covered by fine growth strips. The young animal can still withdraw into the housing. In the further course of growth, the shell remains in its development and the animal becomes a half-slug, the shell sits as a small cap on the rear part of the mantle. The embryonic casing is enclosed by the end turn. When stretched out, the animal can be up to 2 cm long. The soft body has a blue-gray color.

Occurrence and way of life

The reddish Daudebardia lives in the leaves and under stones in the damp forests of the low mountain range. It predatory feeds on earthworms, insects (larvae) and other snails. The distribution area extends from North Africa across southern and western Europe to the eastern Mediterranean, the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. In the north the distribution area extends to the Harz Mountains and southern Saxony.

Systematics

The reddish daudebardia is divided into several subspecies by some authors. In more recent work they are seen as synonyms.
