history

The company was founded by Günter Knapp in 1952 in a small workshop in his private house.

In 1960, the core business consisted of building special machines such as donut fillers, breast pumps and elevators. This year the first order was placed in the pharmaceutical wholesale sector . This gave rise to the idea of producing automatic order picking machines.

In 1974 Knapp received its first international order. In 1980 the number of employees rose to 79. In addition, Günter Knapp acquired a plot of land near Graz, which still serves as the company's headquarters today.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the first automatic order picker was developed for use in pharmaceutical wholesaling and was used by Gehe in Germany in 1985 . In 1990 the company entered the American market.

Over the years, Knapp developed into a large company in the software sector , which was made possible by the acquisition of ATIS (now KNAPP Systemintegration GmbH), SYSLOG and LOGIM.

As of 2000, the company was listed as one of the world's top 20 material handling suppliers. In 2002 the number of employees rose to over 1,000 for the first time.

In 2008 Knapp took over the logistics company Moving AB in Scandinavia. Since then, Knapp-Moving has branches in Sweden , Norway and Denmark . Furthermore, the construction of the new group and development headquarters in Hart bei Graz began.

Since July 1, 2009, Knapp has been a public limited company under the name Knapp AG.

In 2010 Dürkopp Fördertechnik GmbH in Bielefeld (Germany) was taken over and the company expanded its field of activity to include textile logistics. In October, a new corporate headquarters was opened in Hart near Graz. Through cooperation with the Japanese company Daifuku , Knapp gained a stronger presence in Asia in the field of “Material Handling Systems” (MHE). The companies ivii GmbH and RedPilot were founded in 2016.

Since 2018 Knapp AG has more than 4100 employees in over 40 locations worldwide.
