The Knappschafts Heilstätte was operated on Steierberg in Sülzhayn , today a district of Ellrich . The client was the North German Knappschafts-Pensionskasse zu Halle / Saale , the architect was Gustav Hasse . The construction period lasted from 1896 to 1898. Medical Councilor Emil Kremser was appointed chief doctor. The opening with the admission of the first patients took place on January 17, 1898, the inauguration was on October 15, 1898. The patients included miners. In wartime, the facility also served as a hospital . In the post-war period the house was used by the Russian army. Then it was used again for the treatment of lung patients, the number of whom had risen sharply again after the Second World War . At the end of the 1960s, the house became a rehabilitation center for paraplegics , certainly due to its proximity to the inner-German border . After the fall of the Wall, the house was still used as a hospital for paraplegics, but it was far from meeting western standards. A new clinic was built in Sülzhayn to replace it. The old building was closed on March 15, 1997. The former Knappschafts Heilstätte has been empty since then and is left to decay. Investors for re-use have not yet been found.
