history

As a result of the rapid industrialization in the German Empire at the end of the 19th century, there was an enormous increase in respiratory diseases in industrial centers and large cities - a direct consequence of a phenomenon that is now known as smog . Paul Stieber , the director of the North German Knappschafts-Pensionskasse Halle , had the idea to visit the region of the southern Harz, which is still dominated by agriculture and forestry, for air cures. He also hoped to be able to offer relatively inexpensive health treatments there for the miners and the workers. The health resort in the region was possible until the 1950s, when the health resort became isolated due to its proximity to the inner-German border . The majority of the spa hotels and homes were closed. What remains is the KMG Rehabilitation Center Sülzhayn, in which children, adolescents and young adults with neurological, neuropsychiatric and developmental disabilities are treated. In addition, the rehabilitation center has the unique selling point of treating people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders ( FASD ).

You can still find traces of the past in and around Sülzhayn. Numerous large houses suggest that Sülzhayn was a completely different place 100 years ago.

The following houses can still be found today:

  • Knappschafts Heilstätte and Sanatorium Dr. Kremser
  • Glückauf Sanatorium
  • Sanatorium recovery
  • Hohenstein Sanatorium
  • Hohentanneck sanatorium
  • Waldhaus Sanatorium
  • Otto Stubbe Sanatorium
  • Sanatorium Dr. Stein's new sanatorium
  • Sanatorium Kurhaus
  • Rodehorst Sanatorium

On April 9, 1994, the community Sülzhayn was incorporated into the city of Ellrich.
