Appenrode is a district of Ellrich in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

location

Appenrode is located in the southern foreland of the Harz Mountains . The Ellerbach , a tributary of the Zorge , flows through the village. The district is also subject to the karst phenomena of the Harz foreland. The agriculturally used areas are therefore mostly remote from groundwater. The village can be reached via state road 2073 and county roads . It is four kilometers to the next train station.

history

The district was first mentioned in a document in 1190. After this time the place was subordinate to Bischofferode and Bettlershayn . After the Flegler War of 1412, people from Bettlershayn settled on Haynerberg . That was also a step towards new independence. The predominantly agricultural place usually had around 450 inhabitants. They worked in agriculture, also in the nearby war industry (during the time of National Socialism) or mostly in mining as commuters .

Attractions

Natural monument trowel

At Appenrode there is a grotto-like cave, the natural monument Kelle , which was already described in 1589 . The cave, which is still open to the public, has a hall-like space in the access area up to 25 meters high, 16 meters wide and still 20 meters deep. Before a partial collapse due to continuous weathering in the 19th century, this hall was 95 meters deep. At the bottom of the cave there is a small cave lake, this has a maximum depth of 5 meters. The cave was a well-known attraction two hundred years ago and was also visited by Gottfried August Bürger , Johann Wilhelm Gleim and Christoph August Tiedge .

Another attraction is the Church of St. James .
