The Knez Mihailova ulica ( Serbian Улица кнез Михаилова Ulica knez Mihailova ) is the most famous boulevard in the Serbian capital Belgrade . As a traffic-calmed pedestrian zone, it is an important shopping center, which is characterized by representative buildings that were built between 1870 and 1925.

history

The road follows the ancient network of the Roman Castrum Singidunum . During the Ottoman era, there were gardens, fountains and mosques along the street. In the middle of the 19th century, the gardens of Aleksandar Karađorđević occupied the upper street . After the implementation of the city regulation (1867) under Emilijan Josimović , the street got its current appearance. The wealthy citizens of the city built their houses in the street. In 1870 the street was given to Prince Mihailo Obrenović III by the city administration . declining names.

Well-known buildings

The oldest neoclassical building in the street is the Hotel Srpska Kruna from 1869 opposite the Kalemegdan . From 1945 to 1970 the National Library of Serbia was located here, today the Library of the City of Belgrade is located here.

The building of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts , built 1923-1924 according to plans by Dragutin Đorđević and Andra Stevanović in an academic style, shows elements of the secession . The building houses the academy's library, the archive, a gallery on the ground floor and various shops.

Several once private houses were later converted into official buildings, such as Marko Stojanović's house from 1889 in the pseudo-Renaissance style. The Academy of Fine Arts resided here, and its gallery is here today. The block of three townhouses dating from the 1870s marks the beginning of the architectural discontinuity with traditional Balkan buildings in Stari Grad . Hristina Kumandudi's house from the 1870s is a corner house and for some time housed the French-Serbian bank, later the consulate of Belgium and Great Britain. Kristina Mehana's house was built in 1869 and for some time housed the city council.

Today's appearance

The Knez Mihailova is Belgrade's most popular promenade and one of the most famous pedestrian zones in the region. As the shortest connection between Terazije and Kalemegdan , it is Belgrade's most famous street and tourist attraction with numerous cafés and souvenir shops.

Many foreign fashion labels have their Belgrade offices here, as well as the representative offices of well-known foreign airlines. The Goethehotel and an exclusive noble hotel are located in or not far from Knez Mihailova.
