High frequency relay

Electromechanical coaxial relays are used as switches in high frequency technology . Coaxial relays are available for frequencies from 0 Hz to 40 GHz. An alternative with the same function for switching HF paths, but without mechanically moving contacts, are special electronic circuits with pin diodes ( English pin switches ).

A distinction is made between hot switching and cold switching for the input power of the relay. Furthermore, a distinction must be made whether the power is applied permanently (continuous wave signal) or whether the power is only applied for a short time (pulsed signal).

The transmission losses are dependent on the skin effect , which in turn is frequency-dependent. Typical values for a good switch are 0.2 dB at 5 GHz, 0.5 dB at 18 GHz and 1 dB at 40 GHz.

The isolation is more than 90 dB at frequencies above 18 GHz and more than 50 dB at 40 GHz.
