Antenna switch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An antenna switch is a device that allows the operator of a radio station to connect a radio device to different antennas or, conversely, to control the same antenna from different radio devices. There are passive devices that are within easy reach of the operator, as well as remote-controlled, mostly electromechanically operated models.

construction

Mostly it is a matter of changeover switches , which can switch between several (mostly two or four, but there are also changeover switches with more outputs) coaxial cables . The basic structure is very simple, since the shielding of the coaxial cable is grounded and therefore only the core of the input cable has to be connected to the output. If, for example, lower losses are required in gigahertz technology, the structure becomes significantly more complicated, since the lowest possible attenuation must be ensured here. The same applies to high transmission powers, since heat can occur here due to losses and, if this circumstance was not sufficiently considered in the design, would lead to welding of the switching contacts in the case of simple switches.
