The Kobarid Museum (Slovenian: Kobariški Muzej ) is a war history museum in the Slovenian municipality of Kobarid . It was founded in 1990 and was awarded the Valasor Prize and the Museum Prize of the Council of Europe in 1993.
The area of Kobarid (German: Karfreit , Italian: Caporetto ) was in the First World War as part of the Isonzo front, the scene of several battles between Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Italy , which fought on the side of the Entente (see Mountain War 1915-1918 ). After a long and costly positional war, the Central Powers achieved a breakthrough in the Battle of Karfreit in October 1917 , although this was not of course decisive for the war. The Kobarid Museum documents the course of the fighting and the life of ordinary soldiers on both sides with texts, photographs, landscape models and numerous exhibits such as B. weapons, uniforms, ammunition and everyday objects. In addition, part of the museum is dedicated to the eventful history of the Kobarid community.
