Koide Narashige ( Japanese 小 出 楢 重 ; born October 13, 1887 in Osaka ; died February 13, 1931 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga style.

Life

Koide Narashige went to Tokyo in 1907 and began studying at the Tokyo State Art Academy (now the Tokyo School of Art ) in the department of traditional painting, but then switched to the department of western painting, studied under Kuroda Seiki and graduated in 1914. He then exhibited in the Western Painting Department at Nihon Bijutsu-in .

In 1919, in the sixth exhibition of the artist society Nika-kai, the painting “The Family N” ( N の 家族 , N no kazoku ) and won the Chogyū Prize. The next year he won the Nika Prize and became known with the painting "Portrait of O-Ume" ( お 梅 の 像 , O-Ume no zō ). The influence of Kishida Ryūsei and other contemporaries can still be felt. In 1921 Koide went to Europe. A longer stay in France was planned, but he returned after half a year, but not without visiting Berlin for almost three weeks in October 1921. The visit to Europe influenced his style. He now tried to reproduce his impressions more spontaneously and more simply, making even greater use of the possibilities of oil paint.

In 1923 he was accepted into the Nika-kai Society. In the following year he opened, together with Nabei Katsuyuki (1888-1969) and others, the Shinanobashi Institute for Western Art ( 信 濃 橋 洋 画 研究所 , Shinanobashi Yōga Kenkūjo ) in Osaka, which became an important institution for the promotion of Western art developed in the Kansai area. Despite poor health, Koide tried to keep developing. At the same time he created book illustrations, such as the one for Tanizaki Jun'ichirō's work "Worms that eat knotweed" ( 蓼 食 う 虫 , Tade kuu mushi ). Koide also engaged in painting behind glass.

In the years 1928 to 1930 Koide created a larger series of recumbent nudes, for which slight deformations of the limbs are typical.

Koide also worked as an essayist and left behind a number of volumes of essays, e.g. B. “Narashiges Essays” ( 楢 重 随筆 , Narashige zuihitsu ; 1927), “Soothing landscapes” ( 目 出 度 き 風景 , Medetaki fūkei ; 1930), “New techniques of oil painting” ( 油 絵 新 技法 , Abura-e shin-gihō ; 1930 ) and "The atmosphere is important" ( 大 切 な 雰 囲 気 , Taisetsu na fun'iki ; 1936)
